Dr. Dobb’s Journal is hosting a game development contest called The Dobbs Challenge. It’s a bit different from most game development contests I’ve seen online. In this one, they provide a complete game, including the full source code and art assets, for you to mod. The contest is obviously sponsored by Microsoft. Aside from the Visual Studio ad on the contest page, one of the requirements is that you modify the game using a trial version of VS2008. Also, some of the characters in the game are from some Microsoft machinima videos and the game play involves collecting Visual Studio icons. There’s a $10,000 prize pool up for grabs, though, split over six award categories.
The deadline is June 13th.
