Devlog: The Game

I’m no longer developing Smoothie as a 2D game engine. I took a hiatus from most of what I wanted to be working on in order to do quite a bit of contract work. Now that all of that is finally done and I’m back to the fun stuff, I’ve decided to stop fooling around and get my game done. I’ve been working on it in one form or another for a long while now. Name something not to do as a game developer and I’ve probably done it. Instead of refactoring when I hit a wall, I’ve started over numerous times, often in different languages. I wrote a post last year about writing game engines when you really want to write games, yet I still embarked on a project to write a 2D game library to use for my games (after switching languages for the umpteenth time). No more!

I’m usually quite decisive and very nearly single-minded when there’s something I really want to do — it gets done. But when it comes to my personal game projects I’ve long suffered from analysis paralysis. It’s been several years since I last completed a game. I’ve not been too hard on myself about it, thinking that it will get done when it gets done. Now, I can’t understand why it’s not done yet. I’m not getting any younger, after all. Fortunately, I’ve reached the same state of mind that led me to successfully quit smoking and has gotten me back into the gym. This game is going to get done.

I’ll be posting devlogs on my progress as I start making it. I’ll also be posting updates here on the reinvention of Smoothie. With that, I’m looking to fill a void in the D community. We’ll see how it goes.

Now excuse me while I get back to working on the game.
